The xylophone is a pitched member of the percussion group. Although it has been used sometimes in symphony orchestra compositions (Saint-Saëns, Schoenberg, Shostakovich), concertos for the instrument are rare - much rarer than for marimba for example. I have selected the concertino by Toshirō Mayuzumi from 1965, played by Joanne May and the Foundation Philharmonic Orchestra under David Snell on ASV.
