Alphorn

The alphorn  is a traditional lip-reed wind instrument. It consists of a long straight wooden natural horn, with a length of 3 to 4 meters. The alphorn is used by rural communities in the Alps, and is a rare instrument in classical music. I only know of two concertante works, a concerto by Jean Daetwyler and a concertino by Ferenc Farkas. I went for the first one, composed around 1980. It is played by Jozsef Molnar with the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra under Urs Schneider on Naxos.
