Alto Flute

The alto flute, pitched below the standard C flute, is the third-most common member of its family after the flute and the piccolo. It is occasionally used in classical music, inter alia in Stravinsky's Sacre du Printemps and Shostakovich's Leningrad symphony. Kalevi Aho recently created a concerto for this mellow-toned instrument. It is played by Sharon Bezaly with the St Michel Strings under Erkki Lasonpalo on BIS.
