Turntables

Turntables... now there's a baffling choice for a concertante instrument. It is easy to dismiss this as a (bad) musical joke, but the BBC considered this concerto worthy of inclusion in their famous Proms concerts earlier this century. The composer's name might have helped: Gabriel Prokofiev, grandson of the grandmaster himself. I opted for his first turntables concerto from 2006. It is played by DJ Switch with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra under Alexei Bogorad on Signum Classics.
