Timpani

Timpani (or kettledrums) are tuned percussion instruments consisting of a large copper or fiberglass bowl with a drumhead stretched across the top. Uniquely, they are the only orchestral drums that produce definite pitches. As such, they are more suited for a concerto than many other percussion instruments. Kalevi Aho composed a concerto for them in 2015. It is played by Ari-Pekka Mäenpää with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra under Erkki Lasonpalo on BIS.
