The shakuhachi is the Japanese bamboo equivalent of the western recorder. In classical music it is probably best known for Toru Takemitsu's brilliant composition November steps (1967), a double concerto for shakuhachi and biwa. For a solo concerto I picked the one by American composer and shakuhachi virtuoso James Nyoraku Schlefer. He is the soloist in this concerto, with the Orchestra of the Swan under Kenneth Woods on MSR.
