Kantele

The kantele or kannel is a traditional Finnish and Karelian plucked string instrument (chordophone) belonging to the wider zither family. Its use in classical music has not been very notable, but Kalevi Aho (contemporary Finnish composer of numerous concertos) has composed a concerto for it that undoubtedly will be recorded some time. Until then, I have selected a kantele concerto named "Alkul" by Icelandic composer Hugi Guðmundsson. The work can be viewed here, played by Eva Alkula with the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra under conductor Bernharður Wilkinson.
