The flute is a very common instrument in classical music, be it chamber music, orchestral works or concertos. There have been many concertos for the instrument, from the days of Vivaldi via CPE Bach, Mozart, Nielsen and Ibert to more recent composers like Arnold, Beamish, Gubaidulina and Rorem. One of my favourites is the flute concerto by Christopher Rouse (1993). It is played by Carol Wincenc with the Houston Symphony under Christoph Eschenbach on Telarc.
