Cor Anglais

The cor anglais, or English horn, is a double-reed woodwind instrument in the oboe family. It is essentially an alto oboe in F. The instrument features in many orchestral works and chamber music, but surprisingly few concertos have been written for it. Examples are the ones by Ball, Hoffer, Rands and Rorem. By far my favourite concerto is the one by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks in 1989. It is played by Normunds Šnē with the Riga Philharmonic Orchestra under Krišs Rusmanis on Conifer.
