The cello is of course not only a regular symphony orchestra instrument, but also one that is frequently used for concertos - most likely the third most frequent after piano and violin. I had to make a cut-off somewhere to define "unusual" and I left the cello in - if only because it gives me the chance to plug once more my favourite concerto for the instrument. It is by English composer Ernest John Moeran from 1945, and it is played by Raphael Wallfisch with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta under Norman Del Mar on Chandos.
