Celesta

The celesta may look like a small upright piano, but technically it is a tuned percussion instrument. It was invented in 1886, and has made little appearance in classical music; its best-known use is undoubtedly Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker. I have opted for the concertino for celesta and orchestra by Roderick Elms, played by the composer with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Stephen Bell on Dutton Epoch.
