Basset Horn

The basset horn is a distant family member of the clarinet. It makes an occasional appearance in the oeuvre of classical age and early romantic composers (Mozart, Mendelssohn, Dvořák) and has featured in more recent works by the likes of Sessions and Stockhausen. Concertos for the instrument are extremely rare. I prefer 20th and 21st century concertos for this overview, but the only one I found was by Bertold Hummel, which as far as I know has not been recorded. Fortunately, there is a good concerto from the late 18th century by Carl Stamitz. It is played by  Sabine Meyer with the Academy Of St. Martin in the Fields under Iona Brown on EMI.
