The bass viol is a member of the viola da gamba family, popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, but superseded by violin, viola, cello and double bass. American composer John Harbison revived interest in the bass viol by composing a concerto for the instrument. It is played by Edwin Barker with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project under Gil Rose on BMOP.
