Sitar

The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument, originating from the Indian subcontinent in the 18th century. It is mainly used in Indian classical music, and has gained acceptance world-wide since its introduction in pop and rock music by the Beatles and others in the sixties. The most famous concertos are by Indian composers, in particular Ravi Shankar. I opted for his first sitar concerto, composed in 1976. It is played by Ravi Shankar himself with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Andre Previn on EMI.
